johnny romone, paul mccartney, my brother and prostate cancer

Why is it death seems more significant when it occurs to famous people? I said "seems." Did you know that many physicians are nihilistic when it comes to prostate cancer? Yes...the good cancers will behave and the bad cancers are bad from the get go and will behave bad no matter what you do.

When it comes to prostate cancer, cure isn’t the only factor in the decision making process.

Prostate cancer decision making is multi-factorial. It may surprise you that “cure” is not the only thing to consider.
What’s best for the cancer may not be best for you!

Why?

  • When you compare the survival rates at fifteen years regardless of the treatment chosen…it is about the same for all treatment choices.
  • So…if you do about the same as far as curing the cancer then one begins to really look at the side effects of the various choices and what you have to go through to have a particular treatment.
  • Surgery done with the robot takes about three hours, you stay in the hospital a day, you wear a catheter about a week.
  • Radioactive seed therapy takes about an hour and half to do, you don’t wear a catheter, and it is done as an out patient.
  • So far seed therapy is winning in terms of the procedure itself…you have seen the radioactive seed commercials haven’t you? Treatment one day and playing golf soon after. Quite the compelling argument. But let us continue might we?
  • Both removal and seeds…

Prostate cancer 101-A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Not all prostate cancers are created equally. Not all men are created equally. Not all life situations are created equally.
So…not all prostate cancers are treated equally.
A word to the wise is sufficient.

Why is it that 30,ooo or so men die of prostate cancer die yearly in the U.S.?

Could it be that men are lulled to sleep by generalizations about the prostate and then apply them “specifically” to themselves?

  • Yes some prostate cancers are slow growing…but not all are.
  • Yes some people die with their prostate cancer but not of it.
  • Yes most prostate cancers are diagnosed and the male has no voiding symptoms…
  • But…if you have prostate cancer and you have symptoms then you are too late.
  • Yes most people do not die of prostate cancer-does that mean you won’t?
  • Yes it is a “disease of old men” in general but you men die from it as well.
  • Yes do your reading, talk to friends and your doctor but don’t general impressions and half-truths guide your judgement.
  • Yes if your chances of dying of prostate cancer is a low percentage…

Steam therapy for BPH-Does it cause ED?

Heretofore urologists have been leery to do any procedure on a radiation treated prostate cancer patient. Since Rezum does not cut tissue it may become a procedure for both the patient wanting to improve urination before radioactive seeds and to improve the voiding pattern is this is exacerbated by seeds.

Conclusions: Convective water vapor thermal therapy provides durable improvement to LUTS for 12 months and urinary flow while preserving erectile and ejaculatory functions.

Note: Most all of the treatments for enlarged prostate cause retrograde ejaculation. Because the prostate channel is opened with procedures to allow a better stream, in doing this the semen is not propelled forward and stays in the urethra. It is then voided out at the next urination. Medically this not an issue but some men do not like the fact that it happens. Retrograde ejaculation has not been noted in Rezum therapy. In addition Rezum in some cases improved sexual function which at this time is unexplained.

This is a real scenario and shows the complexity of managing certain situations about the prostate. Part of the problem is the common misconceptions about the prostate and prostate  cancer. As well all the things you read in the paper or hear on TV about new studies showing that the PSA is unreliable and is used too often by Urologists and in turn resulting in too many men being biopsied and then subsequently being treated…and subsequently as a result negatively affecting their lives with incontinence and impotence.

So imagine you are in the exam room with your doctor in the above situation and your urologist is walking you through the fine line of doing just the right amount of tests or procedures to determine if you have prostate cancer. The bottom line is that if you have cancer and this is found out a year after your office visit…you’d be…
